a chair for joni mitchell, 2019

This is a chair for you as much as it is a chair for me.

It is for you to build, take apart and rebuild in every place it follows you to. It is for you to interpret and reinterpret its use and form, and but when it dips or rises, you dip and rise with it.

This is a chair for everyone.

This is a chair just for one person. It can be made by anyone or by no-one, by hand or machine. Startling in its simplicity, yet complex in its process. It is a jigsaw puzzle, a stool, a foot-rest, a stage prop- but above all it is four pieces of plywood.

This is a chair for Joni Mitchell.

It is a chair for a person listened to by many and yet not heard by all. It is a chair that speaks to the creative process and what it means to distill something down to a single feeling. It is a chair made for a rambling growl and a voice as sweet as honey. It is a chair on which you may see yourself, or perhaps not.

Either way it doesn’t matter to us, or to Joni. Afterall, it’s just a chair, or two.
